by Corey Gray ![]() Lime Crime has been teasing us on Instagram with swatches from their new “Livin’ on a Prairie” collection of liquid lipsticks, and now it’s finally here. The brand has never been one to give us a release date for their new releases, so it was a pleasant surprise the day I woke up and saw the email notifying me that the collection was now available for sale. This is Lime Crime’s biggest collection launch of their
Velveteen Liquid Lipsticks and is marketed a bit differently than any of their collections or sets before. They’ve had the True Love set which was a Valentine’s Day collection of three Velveteens, they’ve done the I Have Two Moods set, which explored the duality of makeup and offered two drastically different Velveteens, but this launch is much more of a true collection. The two examples I used were sold originally only in the set, though now you can get all of the shades separately, whereas with this collection, you can buy the shades individually or in a pack right now. Like all of their Velveteens, you get 0.088 fluid ounces of product for $20.00, but if you buy the “Livin’ on a Prairie” collection of all five new Velveteens, it’s only $75.00. As far as I know, this collection is going to be permanent. If I’m going to be honest, the concept of the collection confuses me. The name is clearly (or at least clearly in my mind) in reference to Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer”, but it’s marketed as essentially a grunge farmer collection. With shade names like ‘Rustic’ and ‘Saddle’, it doesn’t look like any inspiration was taken from Bon Jovi other than the collection name, and honestly the collection doesn’t even really jive with the brand’s current image. I have honestly no idea who these edgy farm folk are that Lime Crime is trying to market to with this, but luckily, the color range is this collection makes up for all of that. It’s a very exciting collection of shades that are all wholly unique to each other, and to anything Lime Crime has released before. There has been increased attention and interest on more uniquely colored lipsticks in the makeup community, but some people have been too scared to take the plunge into the avant-garde options, so Lime Crime has formulated some very flattering and more demure versions of the unique shades we’ve all been drooling over. Two shades from this collection have really been catching people’s eyes: Wisteria, a mid-tone dusty lilac that’s so flattering for those into purple lipstick, and Thistle, a mid- tone gray-blue is the perfect more “wearable” option if you’ve been wanting to try either a blue or gray. There’s also Saddle, which is a darker red-based brown that is great option for those who are hesitant to take the leap into a true chocolate brown. Then, of course, there are the more conventional shades, Prairie, a nude dusty rose, and Rustic, which is a rich pomegranate red. I’ve tried many of Lime Crime’s Velveteens in the past, so I know that their formula is very pigmented and lightweight, if not a bit watery. It’s definitely one of my favorite liquid lips formulas, and with their unmatched color selection and funky and sometimes a little confused marketing tactics, this is a great brand and this is a great collection launch. I highly recommend you check out Lime Crime and their “Livin’ on a Prairie” collection!
