by Asma Gaba Feminism is defined as, “the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.” It is because of feminism that women in the United States can vote, own land, and even divorce. Many women sacrificed their lives so we, the women of today, can reap the benefits, and to make sure that we keep a look out for equality for both men and women. I’ve witnessed too many women deny the word feminism,
because it gives others the impression that they harbor misandry and hide it behind the guise of gender equality. It is true- there are women out there who misuse the feminism label and do, in fact, support man-hating. But instead of denying feminism, why not take it back instead of essentially giving defeat? Isn’t denying feminism a blow to the face of all the women who sacrificed their right for our generation and others to come? Instead of feminism, these people would much rather label themselves as egalitarians. Egalitarianism is defined as: “of, relating to, or believing in the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities.” Egalitarianism is a noble movement- after all; it’s what we all as a human race are looking for. But see- egalitarianism is a broad movement and in effect, has a broad goal. Underneath egalitarianism, there are an abundance of other movements whose main goal is to achieve human equality. By tackling issues like mental health stigma, racism, homophobia, islamophobia and feminism- we are all fundamentally working towards an egalitarian society. It’s impossible to achieve human equality if we do not give our hand to assist marginalized groups in the world. Another misconception about feminism is that it is exclusive for first world countries, which is false. What about women in Saudi Arabia who are barred from studying certain majors? Who can’t drive or vote? What about the issue of child brides and rape that’s common in India? What of the multitude of African countries where genital mutilation is a norm? Where girls’ breasts are literally cut off and ironed down with a hot plate to reduce sexual appeal? Yes. Women in first world countries have made major steps towards equality, and yes, we still have many a ways to go in this society that seems to favor men. But don’t forget! The women of other countries need feminism much more that the women of first world countries. Denying the feminism movement is essentially dismissing major women’s issues around the globe. Remember: You can be an egalitarian and a feminist, too.
